When a web agency wants to localize a site that is being redesigned before it goes live, the staging environment is almost always protected by Basic authentication. Sotomuke can use those credentials to fetch the site.
How to set it up
- On the dashboard, click "Add site," open "If the site uses Basic authentication," enter the username and password, and paste the URL.
- For sites that are already registered, you can save, change, or remove the credentials under the "Settings" tab on the site page → "Authentication for fetching (Basic authentication)."
How credentials are handled
- Credentials are stored encrypted and are attached only to fetch requests sent to that site's domain (the original site).
- Images and CSS loaded by preview pages are fetched with the same credentials, so previews can be viewed without logging in. Anyone who knows the preview URL can view it, so please take care if you do not want to share pre-launch content widely (previews are not indexed by search engines).
- Once you remove authentication after the site goes live, click "Remove." Leaving the credentials in place does no harm, but it is safer not to keep information you no longer need.
Switching to the production domain
A site created with a staging URL will keep fetching the old URL after launch if its settings are left unchanged. Add the site again using the production URL, then export the translation CSV and glossary and import them to carry over your edited translations.
